Liquid Compass

I was so sure of myself,

Knew every step I would take,

My future mapped out,

Almost arrogant, I was.

But life follows a liquid compass,

Mercurial, shifting when we least expect it.

Suddenly the compass spins madly,

A room of Fun House mirrors,

A roller coaster out of control,

I am lost, confused,

Wondering who I am and where to go next.

And then I remember…

I look in my heart,

Finding my true compass,

I right  my path,

Lift my chin,

And set my sails for the light  off in the distance,

Battered and weary,

But full of hope.
