As a musician I have always been highly attuned to hands. They are miraculous to me in their ability to convey both technical and musical prowess on an instrument, to create, to soothe, to work, to care for, and to love…So many facets. I am especially drawn to the hands of very old people, as they are marked with such stories and history. I am grateful that I took photos of my mother’s and my clarinet mentor, Kal Opperman’s, hands. I look at these photos and so many memories come to mind; stories of connection, strength, inspiration, and love.
