Ashes to Ashes

Ashes to ashes

and dust to dust,

I think of you,

brown eyes filled with trust.

You walked at my side for nine happy  years,

Your lion-hearted courage dissolving my fears.

I raised you from the time you could fit in my hand,

My gift from the alley- you barely could stand.

You taught me so much with each passing day;

Patience, compassion- and there’s always time for play!

You welcomed each morning with joy and delight,

and gave all you had until day turned to night.

No more will you greet me with tail fiercely wagging,

Your joy always keeping my spirits from flagging.

Left now are keepsakes,  memories, and heart ever rending,

and the love that does not die,

but goes on, never ending.

  1. A most beautiful, and loving tribute, Denise.
For those of us, who have loved, and lost our dear pets, you speak to that
pain, and loss, that we all feel…….
    Thank you.

    1. Thank you, Catherine, and thank you also for sticking with me as I ‘write it out’. Writing always helps me to process, especially when it comes to loss.

  2. Beautiful poem to remember your beloved friend. Loss of a pet is incredibly painful. Keep writing. Keeping you and Cooper in my thoughts and prayers

    1. I appreciate that so much- thank you. Writing is a survival tool right now. We just lost our cat of thirteen years two months ago, and a close friend a month ago. Life. ❤️
