Today is your birthday, and I am so grateful that you were born. After the many years of our long friendship, we know that each moment is precious and never guaranteed. I hold onto those moments with you; the laughter, the joy, the challenges, the tears. I am a better person for having you in my life, and I thank you for that.

As I watch you stare cancer in the face for a third time, my heart both hurts for you and swells with pride for the courage and determination in which you face yet another challenge in your life. You inspire so many with your vulnerability and honesty as you share the realities of breast cancer and the ravages of chemotherapy. Because of this, you help countless people who either are battling cancer or know someone who is to understand and know they are not alone. Helping people see the raw truth of the experience is a priceless gift. You will never know how many people you have inspired, encouraged, and educated by sharing it all. You turn adversity into an opportunity to help others.

On your birthday, I wish you healing and strength for those days when it seems you can’t go on. I wish you to see your beauty- inside and out- that losing hair can never take from you. I wish you quiet moments to soak in the outpouring of love that is coming to you from all around the world and let it gird you for the challenging months to come. Most of all, I wish for you to know how much you are loved – especially by me. Happy Birthday to my most amazing BFF and cancer ninja! Listen to your heart and follow the wisdom there, one day at a time.

Sending Diane a birthday wish for love and joy!
